Angelo Porazzi’s booth was featured in the video, part 1. He gave me a demo of his new game
Ultimate, based on Ultimate Frisbee. Angelo and I ran through several turns of the game. It’s a two-player game, played on a hex field. The team in possession of the flying disc may either move an athlete or throw the disc (as opposed to the more entertaining “throw an athlete and move a disc”; um… sorry, I’ve been watching too much Buffy. If the disc is caught in the opponent’s end zone, a point is scored. The disc can be intercepted. Movements are fairly simple, including disc angle (it may arc, cool huh?), making it easy to learn but with enough tactics to make it interesting.

"I recently received a copy of Warangel direct from Italy, and it is quite impressive. Along with the basic box game, I also ordered additional maps for each of the enclosed races, and a couple sets of wooden pieces to mount the counters on. The quality of the Italian maps, rules, reference cards, and other components are fabulous, but the English translations and the additional maps are a desktop printer quality. The expansion maps definitely need to be laminated since they are a bit flimsy, and the rules translation is comprehensible and not too burdensome a task. Overall, the English components are very functional, and I have no complaints.
Game play is strictly combat, but a very nice system with an almost endless variety of races and strategies. Think of a simpler version of White Bear,Red Moon/Dragon Pass. If you like WBRM/DP or Avalon Hill's Titan (in my opinion, both of which are two of the greatests ever), you should like Warangel." Thanks Ray Smith

"Warangel is a great light wargame, and its true strength lies in its variety. The game is easy to learn and teach due to the simplicity of the rules, but the special abilities give it a considerable amount of depth. Each race plays differently, and I immediately wanted to try them all out upon playing. Games are fast paced and exciting, and seem to favor the player who takes the offensive initiative, as proper use of all your races special abilities are required to win. There are, however prodcution and availability issues. The game is better produced than most indie/desktop published wargames but is certainly several notches below the german game standard. If this game was more easily available (I had to get my expansions from italy) and a bit better produced (cardboard maps and wooden counters as a standard rather than expansion item) it could have drawn a cult following not unlike that of cosmic encounters. As it stands gamers who appreciate variety, wargames, and fantasy should definately consider picking it up". Thanks Brian Richburg

Here the BGG page about PeaceBowl
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/viewitem.php3?gameid=5575

"Peace Bowl is the newest game produced by Angelo Porazzi (creator of Warangel and Warbeast). It is set in the same universe created by those two games, but is a completely different game system. Four-way “football” sounded like a good theme for a game, so I was quite anxious to give this game a try.
Is Peace Bowl worth trying out? My answer is that it is a thoroughly enjoyable game that is quite a bit of fun. There are some tactical decisions, a good bit of luck, and tremendous interaction between players.
...With each game he produces, Mr. Porazzi’s games are increasing in quality. The box is light years ahead of his previous games’ quality, and is covered with very nice artwork (Mr. Porazzi is a fabulous artist). The cards have good artwork and are of a decent quality, but must be punched out of sheets prior to playing the game (if smooth edges are desired, you may want to cut them out.) All cards have Italian and English on them, but are very easy to read and are color coded, so that very quickly, one barely glances at the text of the card. The board is not of superior quality, basically being laminated heavy stock paper – but is quite functional. On the flipside of the board is a chart, showing all the races of Warangel (90 of ‘em). The counters in the game are of a laminated cardstock type, with about 300 included. Little wooden blocks are included, which can be painted, and counters mounted on them. This is a small amount of work, but the end product is very nice looking, and because you do it yourself, you can pick which armies you want to use. The games components are very well done, considering it comes from an independent designer.
...So I highly, highly recommend this game. Unfortunately, it’s rather difficult to find in America However, Mr. Porazzi is extremely helpful and sends his games quickly, so it’s not that difficult to obtain a copy. Whenever I need a fairly short game (about 30-45 minutes) for four players that is a lot of fun with a few tactical decisions, this is one of the first games to come to mind. The sports theme may initially turn off non-sports lovers, but after playing the game, they will come to enjoy it. It’s been one of the biggest recent hits with my gaming group, and one I will gladly pull out anytime. Congratulations to the Warangel universe for producing yet another interesting, fun game! " Thanks Tom Vasel

KNIGHTS OF THE DINNER TABLE
Warangel 2000 review by Noah Kolman
I stumbled upon this game quite by accident, but boy am I glad I did. I have a lot of respect for a game that has simple rules but mantains strategic complexity, and WarAngel does that better than most.
WarAngel has already won three prestigious Italian awards, and it is easy to see why. The game is a tactical wargame played over a series of hex maps. Each player plays a unique race with five different units, each with their own special abilities. The neat thing is, there are over 70 races to choose from, though only 40 or so have been translated into English so far. All actions are resolved flipping Destiny Shields, wich are coin-sized little tokens with a hit side and a miss side. The number of shields you flip depends on the unit, and the number of hits that show is the damage done. And though the mechanic is simple, it works. The various races each provide their own strategies, and there are more things to do than hack down your opponent.
All in all, WarAngel is a solid game. It is a little hard to get, and the translated rules are not the best, but the little extra effort is definitely worth it. If you like simple, elegant war games, this is definitely one for you.

WESTPARK-GAMERS German website where also Moritz Eggert has the honour to write on. Moritz knew PeaceBowl thanks to BGG and was so kind visiting me and my games at my stand 6-57 at Essen04. Her is his nice article on Angelo Porazzi Games, insered in a larger ESSEN REPORT where other italian games where present at the huge fair 2004:

http://www.westpark-gamers.de/

As usual there were many interesting independent publishers in the "role-players dominion", hall 6. Among them we found Angelo Porazzi, who presented his games Warangel and Peacebowl for the first time in Germany. Warangel has proven to be an immense success in Italy, garnering prizes and recognition. It is a fantasy wargame which stands in the tradition of the old "International Team" games (IT were legendary infamous for their bad rules and translations, but renowned for their themes and love for visual detail). It even uses some ideas for fantasy races from the IT game Zargos Lords (one of their best efforts), but improves greatly on it. So far there are an immense number of races with well-balanced special abilities (also available in expansions) that can duke it out on the hexmap. A great plus of Warangel are the simple and accessible rules, clearly a labour of love. Another interesting game is the new Peacebowl, which one could recommend to the Mr. Bush as an alternative to invading other countries. In the future of Peacebowl conflicts are solved quickly with football games! Peacebowl plays amazingly fast (a game can be completed in 10 minutes) and is a lot of fun. A "beer and pretzel" game, clearly, but with enough decision making to keep it interesting. Angelo is representative of the new gaming generation in Italy, and he clearly is in love with his products. We're sure we will see more of him!

DA VINCI website - Interview with Angelo Porazzi after ESSEN 2004

http://www.davincigames.com/giocarea_eng/11/cover.htm
Angelo Porazzi is the "doyen" of self-production in Italy. The several editions of his fantasy wargame WARANGEL are to be considered a classic in its genre.
By four years (let's say by 2000, when LuccaGames awarded WARANGEL with the Best of Show), I enjoy to be invited to Italian fairs and conventions, both small and large, to which I attend with great fervour notwithstanding my "veteran" age and three children awaiting my homecoming each gaming weekend. It seems to me that starting roughly from 2000 an enormous, very tangible growth of Italian games took place, and Essen 2004 saw many of us attending with great results.
Basing on my experience, which was limited to countless conventions and fairs I livened up in Italy, Essen gave me the beautiful emotion of meeting lots of friends (I just don't manage to call them "customers") who came to visit us equipped with the fair map, thanks to the games which I take pleasure in publishing and illustrating in the last years. They are friends coming from the world who contacted me before, strictly by e-mail: finally I have been able to see them with my eyes. Few things in life are so wonderful.
Designing games merely as a hobby, and seeing them appreciated and sought after by people like me coming from USA, Germany (well, this was easy...), the Netherlands, Switzerland, England, Turkey, Japan, Korea... is a fantastic emotion. You must know that WARANGEL and PEACEBOWL were still unheard of by German game magazines: anyone who knew them outside Italy belonged to a cluster of players interested in new games, well-done things, who searched this self-productions on the Internet after seeing them on the website. Players who don't follow other people who buy a game only because it is widely advertised: sensible and attentive players, who are aware of maps illustrated one by one, depicting a sector of our Earth; who stop to "taste" new characters and races seen on the website; who surely can understand and appreciate the work behind any game, even if it is done just for hobby.
At Essen I saw all wooden tokens I managed to bring with me disappear: players really like them, they allow to custom our own races with excellent results; after Essen, the ninth production re-order of them was sold out.
WARANGEL achieved to sell everything I managed to bring with me in Essen: expansions, maps and tokens. PEACEBOWL sold out the first edition in one year and the second edition is being distributed by our admirable KDS.
In Essen I met, had lunch, travelled, slept and talked with a real host of friends from any part of Italy, and it has been a real pleasure to come upon them and share this experience with them.
There is no space here to list them all, on
www.warangel.it you can read about them and see many photo reportages which I collect as in an album of great memories of this weird and never tedious life of designer which the game world offered to me. A life which I immediately accepted with great joy.
